Terry Fox Run

Congratulations Royal Oak students and staff! Together we ran over 1180 km and raised $674 to be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation!!!!! We are awesome!!!!

I would also like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to our amazing parent volunteers! We appreciate everything that you do to help us run school events like this one. THANK YOU!!

Another HUGE THANK YOU to Royal Oak Sobeys for donating Oranges so that every student could enjoy a healthy snack after their run.

Literacy

This week in literacy students wrote about Orange shirt Day and the importance of recognizing it. We read the book "When I Was Eight" and then students reflected with the guiding questions;
What is Orange Shirt Day? and What does it mean to me?

We have also been working on sentence structure and noticing that a sentence contains a noun and a verb. Students have been taking a "skeleton" sentence, such as; the dog jumped and transforming it into a more complex sentence, for example; the dog jumped over the fence to get to the cat across the street.

Students have begun to read in small reading groups. The focus this week was on the strategy,  Check for understanding - Ask "Who" and "What" at the end of each page.

Math:
Subtraction with Regrouping
And some math word problems using the story Rapunzel:

Inquiry:

We began to look more closely at India. Students watched videos and websites and came up with their own wonders about the country.

Here is a link to one of the videos that got stuck in our heads all day! haha!

Students continued on with their rock observations and drawing conclusions about the rocks they were studying.

  • "Did you know that when lava cools slowly it makes big crystals and when it cools fast it makes small crystals" A.

  • "The rock cycle song has similes in it!" C.

We finished the week off with some zentangling :)

Have a great weekend!!
