It has been a busy week! First of all, a big congratulations to all of your children for the completion of their math and language arts SLAs!! The SLAs were long and your children persevered. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. Results will be sent home with your student shortly. MATH: We continue to review basic strategies in addition and subtraction, with a focus on subtraction. Students used a T-chart to create subtraction equations and solve them. Next we will be demonstrating our understanding of double digit subtraction on a number line. LITERACY: We reviewed what reading to self should look like and how to pick a 'good fit' book. Students have been taking turns reading with me during quiet reading. We continue to work on poetry elements, specifically on the 5 senses, to add detail to our writing. We want to 'show' our readers, not 'tell'. Students used apple slices and started by smelling the apple to generate words, the

Pratt School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run.   Students will gather on the field between the two schools to take part in the annual 30-minute run, which is scheduled to begin at 11:00am.     Students attending afternoon Kindergarten are welcome to attend, if they are accompanied by a supervising adult. On this day please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather (including running shoes).  If the weather is poor, students will walk inside the school during their PE class time. We are asking that each child donate a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry Fox Foundation during the week of September 23 rd -27 th .   All parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child/children in this event are more than welcome. LITERACY: POETRY: Onomatopoeia... what is it? Onomatopoeia  is when a word describes a sound and actually mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to when it is spoken.  Onomatopoeia  appeals to the sense of hearing and writers use it to bring a story or poem to life in the reader's head. It can also help to add a touch of fun or emotion to a piece. STORIES AND WRITING PROMPTS: 'The Word Collector' Students discussed the significance of words, and why we are individually drawn to different words. Students were challenged to read books and collect their own words. We will then sort and group words into various categories! watch it here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmqTgDoWOC8 MATH: WHAT IS PLACE-VALUE? What a great first full week of school! Thank you so much for sharing your children with me. It has been fantastic meeting and learning about each and every one of them. Math  Students worked on reviewing their knowledge from Grade 2 in order to build a solid foundation for math in Grade 3. They worked together to build, pull apart, and rebuild numbers ranging from 0-1000 using Friendly Numbers, Explosion Math and Open Number Lines. If you'd like to continue practicing at home - ask your student about Number Bonds and Friendly Numbers  or  Adding on open number lines! Literacy  Students have began exploring Poetry - looking specifically at the Elements of Poetry. Students were introduced to elements such as alliteration, simile, imagery, onomatopoeia, and rhyming - challenge them to give you an example of one of the elements. Students read and analyzed a variety of poems while looking at each element in order to fully understand it. They were then challenged to apply

Welcome to Ms. Fournier's Grade 3 class! I am super excited to be learning and teaching along-side your student this year. My name is Jennifer Fournier. Now, a little bit about me. I have two fantastic children and quite a few fur babies. My son, Corbin, is going into grade 11 this year and my daughter Felicity, is starting grade 9. We have two sweet cats, a very vocal guinea pig, an energetic hamster and a feisty hedgehog. I have a huge soft spot for animals and we have begun fostering for the Calgary Humane Society. My teaching philosophy is centered around empathy. It is most important to me that your student feels safe, comfortable and loved at school. This is when students are most successful in their learning.  Before I began my journey into teaching, I was, and still am, an illustrator. I have a degree in Visual Communications from ACAD. I illustrated for various magazines, a children’s book, posters and created a short-animated interstitial. I have always enjoyed be
