Thistle the Hedgehog  The students helped compose this part of the blog: We have a special class pet that is a hedgehog and her name is Thistle.  She is nice and soft but can be spiky when she is scared or when it is too loud. She likes to eat mealworms.  She needs a lot of attention. I am so happy that Thistle is part of our classroom community. She is a pretty well mannered hedgehog and loves the attention from the students. As we get to know Thistle, I am allowing students to take her home for the weekend. If this is something your family is interested in, then please let me know. The only thing your family will need to supply is the love and attention to her. Her enclosure is a fairly large glass tank that she will need to be transported in, so if you are interested she will need to be picked up from school so I can supply you with all of her needs. jvshimmonsfournier@cbe.ab.ca Math  In math this week, we have been working on organizing information in a way that

Thank you to everyone who could attend out interdisciplinary literacy night. It was wonderful to see students sharing what they are learning with family. Artist in Residence This week we started our artist in residence with Sharon Fortowsky. Students are making a piece of art inspired by the intricate rugs of India. Students began painting the warp and weft of their 'rug' art. Inquiry We have begun to study quality of life. Students were posed with the question "What is quality of life?", "What do you need, to have a good quality of life?". We read the book 'I have the right to be a child' and looked at the Rights of Children. Students then did a sort to determine what is a  right/need and what is a want. We were super fortunate to have Mr. Petrakos, who is a geologist, come and speak to all the grade 3s! He had so much great information to share with us and lots of questions followed from the students. Rem

Halloween Parade

Halloween 2019 Royal Oak is excited to invite students to wear their Halloween costumes on October 31 st . Please have students come dressed in their costume in the morning (PM Kindergarten & EDC, please come ready in the afternoon!).  Please have your child practice getting in and out of their costume so they can independently dress for washroom breaks.  We ask that costumes do not include: masks, weapons, accessories, or blood/gore.  Regular learning activities will continue throughout the day. Students will get the opportunity to share their costumes with each other by participating in a parade in the halls at 9:30 am. This year, parents are invited to watch the parade in the gym. Please arrive a few minutes early to find a seat. PM Kindergarten students are also invited to watch the parade in the morning, and will have their own parade in their classrooms in the afternoon. In keeping with learning about healthy eating, please do not send any special treats or snack

Reminder: Literacy Night next Thursday, October 17th from 6-7pm here at ROS! No Excuse Words: (from our rock testing) Lustre Hardness Colour Texture Scratch MATH: Subtraction Strategies! Stacking, Place-Value Base 10, Open Number Line, Place-Value Tallies Fun With Dots! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjlNUaqmwTc At first glance this seems so simple! But in fact, this is a powerful tool for mathematical learning as we head into concepts such as repeated groupings, multiplication and division. Using dot cards is a great way to promote conceptual subitizing. Students are given a series of dots that are hidden. Students are then asked to share how they "see" the dots prior to any discussion about how many dots there are. By leveraging spatial reasoning, students can more easily access questions and begin to think about using mathematical operations. Here are a few examples: LITERACY: Writing: What is a sentence? We discussed

I would also like to send out a HUGE  THANK YOU  to our amazing parent volunteers! We appreciate everything that you do to help us run school events like this one. THANK YOU!! Another HUGE  THANK YOU  to  Royal Oak Sobeys  for donating Oranges so that every student could enjoy a healthy snack after their run. Literacy This week in literacy students wrote about Orange shirt Day and the importance of recognizing it. We read the book "When I Was Eight" and then students reflected with the guiding questions;  What is Orange Shirt Day? and What does it mean to me? We have also been working on sentence structure and noticing that a sentence contains a noun and a verb. Students have been taking a "skeleton" sentence, such as; the dog jumped and transfor
