September 23 - 27

It has been a busy week! First of all, a big congratulations to all of your children for the completion of their math and language arts SLAs!!

The SLAs were long and your children persevered. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. Results will be sent home with your student shortly.

MATH:
We continue to review basic strategies in addition and subtraction, with a focus on subtraction. Students used a T-chart to create subtraction equations and solve them. Next we will be demonstrating our understanding of double digit subtraction on a number line.

LITERACY:
We reviewed what reading to self should look like and how to pick a 'good fit' book. Students have been taking turns reading with me during quiet reading.
We continue to work on poetry elements, specifically on the 5 senses, to add detail to our writing. We want to 'show' our readers, not 'tell'. Students used apple slices and started by smelling the apple to generate words, then looking at the apple, feeling the apple, breaking the apple in half and finally eating the apple. We also read the book "Stellaluna", with the specific task of listening and writing down "triple scoop" words. Students also wrote a short story using only a picture prompt. This task was unsupported so students could showcase their independent capabilities.

These weekly words come from our curriculum and are meant to be practiced through our reading, writing and speaking. Students will also edit for these words.
No Excuse Words:
1) Sedimentary
2) Igneous
3) Metamorphic
4) Rock
5) Cycle

INQUIRY:

As global citizens, it is important for us to learn about the world and our impact. With this in mind, we began exploring world maps. Students were given the opportunity to look at maps and write down places that interested them on sticky notes. From there, they were tasked to place them in categories. On chart papers labeled with the 7 continents, students were urged to place their sticky note on the appropriate continent and then decide if what they chose was a country, city, or other. We continue to develop our understanding of our country and the world around us, and address some of our misconceptions, such as; Calgary is a Country.

We also began our work as geologist and started using what we currently know about the three types of rocks. Students used their knowledge of the visible characteristics of rocks and categorized them into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

TERRY FOX RUN:

Students did an amazing job running the Terry Fox run, despite the not so great weather. Our class ran a total of 121 laps!! and thank you so much for your generosity, we raised $44.00 for the Terry Fox foundation. Big shout out to Kaho and Adam who both did a fantastic job speaking at the assembly!!

ORANGE SHIRT DAY:

Please remember that Monday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day. It is a day to recognize the impact of residential schools in Canada. We read the book "When We Were Alone", to increase our knowledge and awareness of Indigenous Peoples and the affects of residential schools. We encourage your child to wear an Orange shirt or a ROS shirt in recognition of this important day.

Thank you!
Have a fantastic weekend!!
